Beached on the Loire
The Loire is not a spectacular river. It is a wide, slow, sandy one that does most of its work quietly and floods when it feels like it. At Montjean the bank shelves off into sand, and the old flat-bottomed boats get pulled up onto it and left there like shoes at a door.
This one had water in the bottom and a plank seat and no obvious owner. Out in the channel a small masted boat sat at anchor, and behind it the far bank went green and low and unremarkable for several miles. The sky was doing all the work — long streaks of high cloud pulled out flat.
I took the wrong road to get here. I have said that before about this stretch of river and it keeps being true.
