The Fossil Pavement
Get down low enough and the street stops being a street.
From pavement height the ammonites run away from you in a row, ribbed and enormous, and the rubble laid between them reads as spoil from a dig rather than the work of a landscaping crew. Beyond them the buildings of Nantes close in on both sides and the road carries on doing what roads do. A car noses in from the left, unimpressed.
I like this frame more than the tidy one. It is grainier, it is shot from an undignified position, and it gets closer to what the installation was actually for — the small lurch of finding deep time laid into a pavement you walk down for the bread.
