Normandy, 1944
Three days on the same coast, seven years apart.
In August 2019 I photographed Pegasus Bridge in the morning, the Merville Battery in the afternoon, and the war cemetery at Ranville in the evening — the bridge they took, the battery they took next, and the graves of the men who took them, without particularly meaning to do it in that order. Three days before that I had been at Omaha.
In August 2026 I went back, west into the Manche, with a different camera. Pointe du Hoc at twenty to four, Sainte-Mère-Église at half past five, Utah Beach just after seven.
These photographs are not really about the landings. They are about what the places look like now — car parks, ice creams, and roses planted along the base of a casemate wall — and how they go on remembering anyway.
