Configuration

The River Aln comes down from the Northumberland hills and broadens into something close to silence before it reaches the sea. At low tide the estuary exposes itself — salt marsh, tidal channels, the cold mud of the North Sea coast, a sailboat waiting at anchor for the water to return.

I was walking the margins of the village with the Nikon FE and a roll of HP5+, not looking for anything in particular, which is usually when the light does something useful. The creek came out of the marsh, turned once, and went off toward the water, and the whole flat caught the light in a way that made the landscape feel less like a place than a state of mind.

Cold, quiet, entirely uninterested in whether I photographed it. Northumberland all over.
