A parachute and an effigy hang from the church steeple at Sainte-Mère-Église, where Private John Steele of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment caught his canopy on the roof in the early hours of 6 June 1944 and hung there. The mannequin belongs to the town; the Airborne Museum keeps its uniform and helmet fresh. It comes down in December and goes back up in January.
