Church Hill, Alnmouth

Northumberland is mostly sky. You can resist that for a while and then you give in and point the camera up, and the land becomes a strip along the bottom holding everything else down.

Church Hill sits at the mouth of the Aln, a low green mound with the sea behind it and not much on it. From the fields inland it is barely a hill at all. But the cloud that afternoon came up over it in one bright stack, hard-edged on top and dissolving underneath, and the grain in the film did the rest.

It is a photograph of weather with a village in it. That is not a complaint. Stand on that coast for an hour and you will understand why the sky gets top billing.
