A road across the sea connecting the Vendée mainland to the island of Noirmoutier — but only when the tide allows it. Miss your timing and the Atlantic rolls in faster than a galloping horse. The beacons aren't decoration. They're for the people who got it wrong.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThat January day the tide was out, the sky was vast, and Noirmoutier sat on the horizon like a quiet guardian. The blue reflected in the still water. The sea air did what sea air always does.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI stood there for a long time, just looking. The horizon was almost empty — just sky, water, and those silent beacons receding into the distance. Hand-forged, bolted flat into the stone of the quay at Montjean-sur-Loire, worn smooth on the inside curve by however many decades of rope. In hard afternoon light it throws a shadow with more drama than the ring itself has any right to. The granite around it is all grain and grit and small failures.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe same quay gave me the flat-bottomed boats. I crouched on it for a while getting this, which is not a dignified way to spend an afternoon, and I would do it again. At Montjean the bank shelves off into sand, and the old flat-bottomed boats get pulled up onto it and left there like shoes at a door.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis one had water in the bottom and a plank seat and no obvious owner. Out in the channel a small masted boat sat at anchor, and behind it the far bank went green and low and unremarkable for several miles. The sky was doing all the work — long streaks of high cloud pulled out flat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI took the wrong road to get here. The Loire moved past both of them with complete indifference.
