A Vespa, resting against a whiskey crate as casually as if it had always been there. Vintage, unhurried, completely itself. Families, towels, bags, the low hum of a public holiday. A couple sit with their backs to me on the grass. Somebody is stood up in the middle distance deciding about the water. Most stop, briefly, then move on. The ammonites were different — fossilised shells the size of lorry wheels, erupting from the paving as if the city had grown them from the inside out.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI'd seen them on a previous visit. This time I brought the Canon AE1, loaded with HP5+, and waited for the moment when the geological and the mundane sat side by side. What makes the photograph is not the fossil. It is the car parked half a metre from it, roof rails and all, with a fresh block of unworked stone balanced on the bonnet like a delivery nobody had signed for.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTwo hundred million years and a family hatchback, sharing a kerb, neither giving way. Nantes does this well. Beyond them the buildings of Nantes close in on both sides and the road carries on doing what roads do. A car noses in from the left, unimpressed.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like this frame more than the tidy one. Against the black sky they burned a deep crimson, the kind of red that has nothing to do with floodlights and everything to do with how a camera sees heat and darkness together. I stood there longer than I needed to. Shot after shot, each one slightly different, until the frame settled into itself.
